About the AISOP project

Creating an AI-assisted decision support system for electricity distribution system operators, underpinned by advanced digital technology, to drive decarbonisation. The project started on 1 May 2022 and runs until 1 May 2025.

Missions

AISOP’s overarching mission is to:

Create an AI-assisted decision support system to drive decarbonisation in electricity distribution systems.

AISOP’s solutions will:

Acquire, process, interpret and exploit data for the benefit of DSO operational planning, integrating AI/ML-based solutions, enhanced situational awareness, and market incentives.

The project will:

Increase grid observability by using data from multiple sources and in different time resolutions
Help DSOs operate the grid using data-driven decision support tools
Improve the efficiency of network operations
Reduce curtailment of renewable energy and distributed energy resources
Improve options for tariffs for prosumers

Outcomes

AISOP aims to create actionable, tangible and applicable outcomes for distribution systems with the goal to improve operational planning and support decarbonisation. The outcomes will take the following forms while insuring reproducibility, replicability and interoperability:

AISOP will contribute to the green energy transition and energy decarbonisation by innovating in both the technological and operational fields. Key areas include:

AISOP aims to involve need-owners at both national scale as well as at the Europe-wide level. The main need-owners representing the potential users of the AISOP solutions are:

System operators (DSO, TSO)

Energy Communities and Energy Managers providing services to the communities

Energy/flexibility aggregators, energy retailers

AISOP will bring the following beyond-tech benefits:

Reduction in DSO challenges through advanced analysis of DERs, ensuring higher hosting capacity of renewables and efficient grid utilisation.

Reduction of CO2 emissions through the development of grid-reflective dynamic tariffs that can improve renewable energy integration.

Cost reduction for consumers by improving network utilisation.

Overall reduction of investment costs by leveraging smart resources that have the potential to support services from stakeholders.

Improvements to data privacy and security resulting from edge analysis and distributed computation.

Improvements to grid resilience as a result of better network visibility.
